Bowerman Associates was hired as the Construction Manager at Grace Episcopal Church located on Westminster Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The project team consisted of Centerbrook Architects and Planners as the project architect with Pare Corporation, e2 Engineers and Wilkinson Associates leading the engineering efforts. As a century and a half old anchor of the street, Grace Episcopal Church has expanded into a new modern glass-filled gathering hall. This stunning new building is adorned with an outdoor cloister garden and peaceful meditation area to complement the spacious event gathering hall.
Bowerman also renovated/converted the existing basement to a new community gathering area and Sunday School space.
Grace Church was originally designed in 1844 by Richard Upjohn, the foremost architect of the time, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Grace was the first asymmetrical Gothic Revival church in America. In 1912, another renowned architect, Ralph Adams Cram, designed the chancel, making it the only Upjohn-Cram church in the world.
“As the owner’s representative, I was very pleased to have worked with Bowerman. Their entire team... was a great asset to the project. The project was a great success and I would have no reservations about hiring Bowerman Associates again, or highly recommending them to anyone,” wrote the owner’s representative, Ted Wetherill.
Pavilion at Grace received a Faith & Form/Interfaith Design Award from Faith & Form; The Interfaith Journal on Religion, Art & Architecture. It is the highest award given by the AIA in the world of religious architecture so it is quite an honor. The project is featured in the Winter 2018 issue of the Faith & Form magazine and will be on display at the 2019 AIA National Conference in Las Vegas next spring.
